SAE, Kerala Cartoon & Animation industry celebrate Aniyug 10 May 2007 09:30 AM
Kerala‘s animation and cartoon industry veterans, professionals as well as students got together at Cochin on 4 th and 5th May to be a part of the 1st edition of Aniyug 2007, an annual animation festival organised by Access Atlantech Technologies & Kerala Cartoon Academy.
The list of attendees included renowned scriptwriter and filmmaker Ranjith Panicker, renowned actress and accomplished dancer Urmila Unni, MLA & Chairman of Kerala Cartoon Academy M. M. Monaye, Kerala MLA Prof. K.V. Thomas amongst others.
Access Atlantech Technologies (I) Ltd and SAE College India CEO Rathish Babu kickstarted the event."The very genesis of organizing such a seminar on animation is to create a platform that brings together a perfect synergy between digital film making, animation and the basic art of cartooning" Babu also emphasized on the importance of technology that‘s transforming the art of entertainment and Aniyug‘07 as an attempt to keep people abreast of the changing syndrome.
Welcoming the delegates, KCA (Kerala Cartoon Academy) Chairman M. M. Monaye thanked everyone involved for their fantastic response to the animation film contest. He announced that over 300 registrations were received in a short tenure. "This by itself is a testimony to the fact that more and more people are taking the art of animation seriously" he commented.
Continuing on the same note, Film maker Ranjith Panicker recollected how cartoons made a difference to his life and changed his outlook towards the social life around him. He also stressed on the need to use technology in the media and entertainment scenario.
Urmila Unni also spoke on the occasion and expressed her surprise about the seriousness which goes behind creating the funny cartoons. K. V. Thomas graced the occasion and inaugurated the cartoon newsletter.
The participants were then invited for the screening of films Ark by cartoonist Abu Abraham and Hitler by Indian Express cartoonist Unni. This was followed by the screening of a 2D animated film on the Rising of 1857. This film has been jointly developed by SAE College and Kerala Cartoon Academy and it took ten days from scratch to end to complete.
The Post -lunch session began with the screening of films by the members of the Kerala Cartoon Academy. Some of the films screened included Bobanum and Moli, Mandus and Pachuvun Kovalanum . Towards the end of the day, a technical workshop on animation was conducted by Antony Cruz, SAE College.
The day ended with a panel discussion on the importance of Animation in the visual medium by eminent personalities and the screening of animated films by Films Division.
The second day of the seminar, Kerala Education Minister M.A. Baby addressed the crowd. Talking about technology orientation, Baby emphasized on the need for rolling out technology oriented vocational training courses in Kerala. He appreciated the efforts of Access Atlantech Technologies and Kerala Cartoon Academy for initiating the process through this seminar.
This was followed by screening of animated projects received as a part of the animation film contest. The post lunch session had SAE International Faculty Retna Guru, speaking on the evolution of the usage of sound in the animation medium. Guru mentioned that unlike yesteryears where sound was recorded post animation; the scenario has changed today with voice recording being an important part of the initial production process.
A series of animated films from the stable of Film Division Corporation was screened for the viewers. This was followed by a panel discussion on the career opportunities available in the world of animation in India and how technology is affecting the people requirement. The event ended with a vote of thanks and a certainity that cartoons and animation is definitly being taken seriously as a career option in Kerala.
